Ten letters from Israel written from camps in Indiana and Tennessee to his sisters and wife. Israel discusses family, his Civil War duties, and the countryside and people of Tennessee. Other items include a letter of recommendation for promotion, a letter of condolence to Fran Israel, and a statement certifying Israel's service and death.

Organized in South Bend, Indiana in 1862, the 87th Indiana Regiment was mustered in on 31 August. The 87th saw action in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. While in the Carolinas the Pioneer Brigade became legendary for its construction of roads and bridges. The regiment moved up to Richmond, Virginia and on to Washington City where it participated in General Sherman's grand review. The 87th was mustered out on 21 June 1865. Israel, Elijah W. (Elijah Witney), 1839-1863.

A native of Johnson County, Ind., Israel later moved to Rensselaer, Jasper County, Ind., where he farmed. During the Civil War he served with the 87th Indiana Infantry Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga. From the description of Correspondence, 1862-1864.
